IN HIS GRIP: WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING!
If I remember it right, I’ve been encountering this the
whole week – people walking forward “without” watching where they were going. I
have encountered it in a grocery store where a lady was pushing her cart of
groceries forward, but she was looking sideways to the stalls. The other day, I
bumped into a teenager who was walking forward while looking at the stuffs for
sale on the sidewalk. And just this morning, a man almost crashed into me at
the footbridge. He was pacing forward, looking over his left shoulder, towards
the other side of the street below us. And I bet that he was unaware that he
was already walking diagonally.
This was pretty annoying actually. It was definitely
foolish to walk without looking ahead of you. You would either cause an
accident or end up being in an accident.
Mulling over what God wants me to learn from these
events, I remember the words in Proverbs 4:25-26. It says, “Look straight
ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for
your feet; stay on safe path.”
As Christians, we walk daily before the Lord. We should
walk as persons who have experienced the goodness of God. We should walk as
persons who were changed because of the love of God; who were once in darkness
but are now living in light. And we should walk as persons who reflect that
love so that other people would know that Jesus is real.
But let us be reminded that in our Christian walk, the
path won’t always be smooth, straight, and safe. There will be roads where we
have to make choices, and roads that would test our faith. Although God
promises to guide us, Satan will definitely do something to distract us and
tempt us to wander from the path, away from where God wants us to go.
Remember what John 10:10 warns us about, “The thief
(Satan) comes only to steal, kill, and destroy…” That is why it is vital to
study the Word of God, to “meditate on it day and night” so that we won’t be
led astray. Let us ask for godly wisdom. And let us “Stay Alert” and pay
attention to what is going on around us.
Ephesians 5:15 tells us, “Therefore be careful how you
walk, not as unwise men but as wise.” If you’re not sure where you’re going,
stop and ask God for direction. If the path you’re walking on has many
distractions – tempting to steal your time for prayer, for Bible reading, for
devotions, or for fellowship – stop, reflect, and refocus! Don’t wait until
you’re totally off your track and are already in “danger zone.” Also, let’s keep
in mind that our Christian walk becomes our testimony. People who don’t know
Jesus are watching how you live your life as a Christian.
